Small People With Big Vocies

The Vietnam War, what was it? Well to put it simply, it was a conflict in which the U.S. was against the spread of communism while communist nations such as the Soviet Union and China wanted to spread its influence. Leading to the separation of the north and southern parts of Vietnam. Which then ended in Vietnam being ruled under communism.

Most of us already know this information whether you learned about it in APUSH or just word of ear. Yet many of us aren't educated in the aftermath of this war and just wars in general. News and social media usually report on "highlights" of these conflicts and don't bring light to the minorities affected by such horrible events.

Refugees. A refugee is a person who has been forced to flee their home country due to fear of persecution, violence, or war. Recently in the 2024 Paris Olympics, the refugee team participating has gained a greater audience than previous years due to their inspiring stories. Such as ones like Cindy Ngamba, being forced to flee Cameroon at just 11 years old, life wasn't easy for her. Yet she has accomplished to be the first ever member of the Refugee Team to win an olympic medal. Another inspirational story that has been shared all throughout social media is the story of the Refugee Teams breakdancer Manizha Talash. After finishing her breakdancing routine, she wraps herself in a cape that had a slogan saying "Free Afghan Women." She would end up getting disqualified from the Olympics, yet she says that she has no regrets, saying "I had been thinking about this for four months, ever since I knew I was going to the Olympics." Many people found her political protest to be brave and inspiring, especially to her fellow Afghan women.

  1. Hi Megan! I really liked your blog this week and how you decided to focus on people who are usually overlooked. Refugee crisis’s and camps have been going on for decades yet no one seems to notice. I think the refugee team at the Olympics should get a lot more recognition than they do and they are all very strong individuals.

  2. Hey Megan! I love how you connected two different parts of history. How you started with the Vietnam war and defining that. Then later transitioned over and connected it to more recent changes like in the 2024 Olympics and the refugee team.
